A panel discussion aiming to answer the questions that come up during the transition from small-scale/fringe to mid- and large scale productions. If you’re struggling to understand the complexity of large systems, the roles of everyone in the sound department (because you are part of a department now!), or what the hell a purchase order is - this session might help! Hosted by Roly Botha, a composer/sound designer who is currently asking all of these questions about their own jobs.
Panel includes Sound Designers, and Production Staff to help paint a picture of how our department works.

Roly Botha (they/them) is a composer and sound designer, and is an Associate Artist of The PappyShow.

John Leonard started his career in the oldest continuously working theatre in the UK, the Theatre Royal, Bristol and has recently worked in the one of the newest, Soho Place Theatre. In between, he has worked in pubs, clubs, convents, cathedrals, community centres, sports halls and the iconic Doncaster Road Baths, Scunthorpe, as well as more traditional theatres throughout the UK, in London’s West-End, New York, Los Angeles, Japan, Norway, Prague, Austria, France, Hong Kong, Korea and Germany.

Jonas Roebuck
Sound and Video Supervisor – National Theatre
Jonas trained at Central School of Speech and Drama, where he studied Sound Design and Sound Production.
He is currently Sound and Video Supervisor in the Olivier Theatre, where he manages a team to deliver all the sound and video requirements including; implementing sound designs, overseeing all sound requirements for show captures including NT Live and NT at Home, facilitating numerous events and working closely with industry partners to maintain and develop systems that provide the tools for creative teams to deliver shows.
Jonas has Production Engineered a wide variety of productions such as; HEX, Translations, Amadeus, Twelfth Night, Threepenny Opera, Les Blanc and Everyman. Recently he Production Engineered Standing At the Sky’s Edge, a musical co-produced with Sheffield Theatres where he worked closely with the Sound Designer to deliver the sound system across both venues.
He’s also been Sound Designer on a number of events including Up Next Gala 2019 and Connections Festival. He was the Associate Sound Designer on Small Island and Paradise.
Jonas has been an opening operator on shows including Follies, Hadestown, Wonder.Land and the National Theatre's 50th live broadcast. He has dialogue mixed and production engineered numerous live theatre broadcasts to cinemas including The Cherry Orchard at Galway Blackbox Theatre, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern at Old Vic Theatre and Saint Joan at the Donmar.
