What I'm working on at the moment
At present I am creating a soundscape for Berwick St John's Church which encapsulates the history of the church and surrounding area. I am also working on ideas for future commissions.
Biog
I started my career in sound with Theatre Projects working in London’s West End on shows such as ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘Jeeves’, I and Albert and ‘Billy Liar’ etc. After doing numerous shows when at TP I decided to move to the heart of new theatre writing and joined the Royal Court. This gave me the opportunity to work closely with writers such as Edward Bond and Samuel Becket to name just two. As I had worked on the original ‘Rocky Horror Show’ I also designed the transfer to the Kings Road while at TP.
Moving from the Royal Court after three years of intensive work I joined a merry band of men at Autograph Sound Recording. During my stay at Autograph we managed to completely revolutionise the theatre sound industry and develop practices that are now part of the fundamental building blocks of most theatre sound designs.
My Theatre work went hand in hand with my commercial work and I became Imagination’s Sound Designer and have worked for all their major clients including Ford, BT, Coca Cola, Holiday Inn, Rolls Royce, and Jaguar Land Rover just to name a few.
Besides being the sound designer for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo for 24 years, I also worked on many other high profile events including, The Royal Tournament, and public celebrations for The Royal Family and the Royal families of Jordan & Saudi Arabia, I also designed the sound for the VE and VJ Day celebrations. The first Military Tattoo held in Red Square was a challenge and a great success, I was awarded the Kremlin Zoria Gold Plate for the quality of the sound produced.
I have been a consultant to Pimlico Opera and designed the sound for Les Miserables and West Side Story in HMP Wandsworth, also Sugar (Some Like It Hot) at Send Prison.
A long working relationship with Helen Marriage since her time as Creative Director of the Salisbury Festival and now as head of Artichoke, has found me working closely with composers such as Orlando Gough and Isobel Waller-Bridge.
My main interest at present is conceiving and designing soundscapes for site specific installations, fly fishing for Brown trout and canal cruising.
