We currently offer six categories of membership, four for individuals and two for organisations:
• Professional Designer
Our criteria for this category is that you make a full or partial living from sound design for theatre in the UK. We ask that when you apply for membership you provide proof (such as a CV) of having designed three professional productions in the UK within the last year. Alternatively, that you provide proof of having designed three professional productions within the last three years and of having worked regularly in theatre sound between those productions
• Professional Member
Our criteria for this category is that you work within the industry of sound design for theatre in the UK. This category might typically include production sound engineers, sound operators, etc.
We ask that when you apply for membership you provide proof (such as a CV) of your experience and activity in the industry
• Student Member
This category is open to all students aged 16 or over on a full time post-secondary course of study. We ask that when you apply you provide proof of your student status (such as a scan of your student ID). Student membership is limited to 5 years.
• Associate Member
This category is open to anyone and there are no entrance criteria
• Corporate Member
This category is open to all companies who work within the theatre sound industry.
• Non-Corporate Organisation Member
This category is open to all non-commercial organisations working in the theatre sound industry, to include educational institutes, theatre sound departments and other professional associations
We are currently focused on the UK theatre industry. In the future we may open up to other countries and/or other industries. If you don't work in theatre, or aren't based in the UK, you can join as an associate member to keep tabs on what we're doing and influence our future direction.
Specific criteria exist for our Student and Professional member categories as we have ring-fenced private areas where those members can discuss confidential issues and share private information.
Corporate membership is available, enabling support of the ASD from the industry and in return we offer opportunities to target our database of members.

- NCO members can also be listed as a Professional Designer or Professional
Member if they meet the criteria for those categories, and receive the
same benefits as those categories. So, for example, a sound designer who
works for a theatre sound dept can join on a NCO membership and will
still be listed in the Professional Designer directory. Please email apply@associationofsounddesigners.com after joining to have this applied to your account.

here. You will be asked to agree to them when you join. The ASD withholds the right to withdraw any of these services at any time without notice.
Duration of Membership & Fees
The membership year runs from September 1st to August 31st. The fees due per annum are:
- Professional Designer: £75
- Professional Member: £75
- Student Member: £30
- Associate Member: £50
- Corporate Member: £600
- Non-Commercial Organisation Member: £100
On joining up, your fee will be calculated pro-rata monthly until the following September 1st.
The Joining Process
- You can apply to join by selecting the membership level you wish to apply for at the bottom of this page.
- You will be asked to fill out your personal information which will form your public profile on the website.
- You'll then be transferred to the PayPal website for payment.

- If you have applied for a membership level which requires evidence to be submitted, you will then receive an automated email from us asking you to provide the relevant evidence.
- Your application will be reviewed within 24 hours of receipt.
- Once accepted you will receive a second email from us and full access to the website will be unlocked.
- If your application isn't accepted we will let you know and refund your money.
- Once your application has been accepted you will receive a welcome email from us. You will be able to log in to the website and access all the features of the website.
Payments will be processed using PayPal. If you do not have a PayPal account you can still pay using your credit or debit card - when you are transferred to PayPal click on the "Continue" link as shown in this image:
